“Poda Poda Odi Poda!” – How Harrini’s Grit and Self-Reflection Turned Her 6th SSB Attempt into a Success Story

"If you fall down seven times, stand up the eight time.” That’s the spirit Harrini from Chennai carried through six challenging attempts before she finally got recommended in her SSB interview. This is not just another SSB success story — it’s a lesson in resilience, reflection, and the power of structured preparation.

"Success in SSB isn't about never failing : it's about learning, evolving, and showing up stronger each time. Harrini’s journey proves that resilience backed by self-reflection always finds its way to recommendation."

The Beginning of a Dream

Born and raised in Chennai, Harrini completed both her schooling and B.Tech as a day scholar. With her father serving as a police inspector and her mother working in Indian Railways, public service was always part of her environment. After Class 12, she aspired to join the defence forces. Though NDA didn’t allow female candidates back then, she didn’t lose hope. Instead, she pursued engineering and began appearing for the CDS exam during her final year.

6 Attempts to Success

"In every attempt, I learnt from those who got screened in. I listen to what they say, I listen to their performance and if I got screened out, I always thought about where I missed it and what did they do better to get in. I even remembered their chest numbers, thinking that this girl with chest number 23 has a very bold and clear narration and it was very easy to understand what she was saying, so maybe I should try it out like that. That’s how I improved in all my attempts. I gave it my all ! ”

Family Support: Her Biggest Pillar

Through multiple rejections, including traveling from Chennai to Punjab alone and coming back disappointed, her parents remained unwavering in her support.“They always said: It’s okay. Next time you will get in."
Their faith, combined with her never-give-up attitude, made the final recommendation even sweeter.

Her 6th SSB Experience: From Tamil War Cry to Team Spirit

"I was the only person from south India in my 6th atttempt. Others discussed a lot in Hindi but somehow I was able to connect with them and they felt me as a humorous person to be with. During the 5 days, we were very friendly and in the group obstacle race, I influenced them to tell a war cry in Tamil. The war cry was 'poda poda odi poda' and even the officers started laughing at us.

I was able to know how to react with the people who were dominating. There was a girl in our group who was very dominating and she even said 'please be quiet' in our GD. The key to handling such people is that we have to be polite and we should not be like them. We can ask them politely that please give us a chance, or let me do this. When we ask them politely, they have to accept it, otherwise it would be a black mark for them only. You should be polite in a way that your point is clear there."

Her SSB Preparation Strategy: What Worked

"Psych, Interview, and GTO are all connected. Be consistent with your story and personality.”
Harrini stresses on the importance of consistency across all three tests. She made sure her SDT matched her behavior and responses across psych and interview rounds. The bold narration, how we listen to others, how we give chance to others, that’s what matters.

R2R’s Role in Her Success: Realizing What Matters

"Before R2R, I had no idea how deep psych was. I didn’t know how interconnected everything was.I didn’t know we have to connect our major ideas until I joined R2R. Everything came to my vision only after joining R2R, realising that it is all interconnected.”  The structured guidance helped her:

  • Understand the core of psychology tests.
  • Recognize how each task reflects OLQs (Officer-Like Qualities).
  • Improve overall coherence in her performance.
“Once my psych improved, everything else started aligning. It was the biggest factor in getting recommended.”
