SSB GD TOPICS NOTES: Crimes Against Men in India | Lack of Awareness or Lack of Legal Protection?

R2R SSB GD Topic Notes

Fresh SSB batches start around the 1st & 15th of every month.

Crime against men is one of the most underrated and unreported topics in India. What is the primary reason behind this?

Leads:

  1. Over-centralisation of Women
  2. Lack of Awareness among Citizens
  3. Lack of Legal Provisions for Men

"Justice must be gender-neutral — and silence around men’s suffering is as dangerous as denial."

1. Over-centralisation of Women
  • Indian laws are predominantly designed to protect women — with many sections of IPC and other acts like 498A, Domestic Violence Act, Sexual Harassment Laws, focusing exclusively on female victims.
  • Social discourse and government initiatives overwhelmingly focus on women empowerment and safety, leaving little space for male-centric concerns.
  • This creates a perception that men cannot be victims, especially in cases like domestic abuse or false accusations.
Impact: Leads to bias in perception and policy, causing underreporting and neglect of male victims.

2. Lack of Awareness among Citizens
  • A large section of society, including men themselves, are unaware that they can seek help or that certain behaviors toward them may constitute a crime.
  • There’s a social stigma — men fear being labelled as "weak" if they speak up about abuse or harassment.
  • Lack of public discourse, education campaigns, or media coverage keeps the issue in the shadows.
Impact: Lack of awareness leads to silence, suffering, and zero demand for reform or legal recourse.

3. Lack of Legal Provisions for Men
  • Currently, India does not have gender-neutral laws in areas like domestic violence, sexual harassment, and rape.
  • There’s no dedicated helpline or redressal mechanism for male victims of abuse, false accusations, or harassment.
  • The judiciary often lacks guidelines on how to deal fairly with male complainants, especially in cases where the law assumes male guilt.
Impact: Even if a male victim comes forward, there is no legal route or support system available, discouraging others from reporting.

Conclusion

While awareness and social acceptance are vital, the lack of legal provisions remains the biggest structural hurdle. Unless laws become gender-neutral and offer equal protection and redressal for all, the issue of crimes against men will remain ignored and unresolved.
