In your opinion, how can India effectively counter Pakistan's proxy war strategy? Leads:

  1. Improving Border Infrastructure
  2. Applying Diplomatic Pressure
  3. Gaining Global Support
"Security is not just the absence of war, but the presence of preparedness, diplomacy, and global solidarity."
1. Improving Border Infrastructure
  • Pakistan’s proxy war largely operates through cross-border infiltration and smuggling of arms or narcotics, especially in J&K and Punjab.
  • Strengthening infrastructure—roads, fences, watchtowers, UAV coverage, thermal sensors—can drastically reduce infiltration.
  • Projects like the Vibrant Villages Programme and smart fencing initiatives are steps in the right direction.
  • Improved infrastructure also supports faster troop movement, better logistics, and civilian development—reducing local support to insurgents.
Impact

Acts as a direct deterrent to infiltration and sabotage attempts.

2. Applying Diplomatic Pressure
  • India has already isolated Pakistan to some extent on global platforms by exposing its support to terror groups like LeT, JeM, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
  • Persistent diplomatic actions—such as revoking MFN status, suspension of SAARC summits, and raising terrorism cases in FATF and UN—have hurt Pakistan’s credibility.
  • Direct engagement with countries that hold influence over Pakistan (like China, US, and Gulf nations) can increase costs for Pakistan’s support to terror groups.
  • Diplomacy also helps avoid escalation into full-scale war, while still putting pressure through economic and political means.
Impact

Targets Pakistan’s global image and economy without immediate military confrontation.

3. Gaining Global Support
  • India’s image as a responsible democratic nation allows it to garner global sympathy and strategic partnerships.
  • Support from the US, France, Russia, and Gulf nations can isolate Pakistan diplomatically and economically.
  • Collaborations in intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism operations, and defense trade strengthen India’s stance.
  • International bodies like FATF grey-listing of Pakistan was possible due to India’s active lobbying.
Impact

Global pressure makes Pakistan’s proxy war unsustainable over the long term.

Conclusion

While border infrastructure deals with tactical prevention, diplomacy and global support strike at the strategic and systemic level. Hence, a multi-pronged approach is necessary—but in the long run, global support can make Pakistan’s proxy war politically and economically unviable, making it the most effective counter-strategy.
