Role of National Cadet Corps (NCC) in Youth Development

🔹 History of NCC

  • The NCC was established in 1948 under the NCC Act of 1948, soon after India gained independence.
  •  It was formed on the recommendation of the H.N. Kunzru Committee.
  •  The concept was inspired by the University Officers Training Corps (UOTC) during British rule.
  • The main aim of NCC was to create a pool of trained and disciplined youth who could contribute to nation-building and also serve as a reserve force in times of emergency.

The NCC has three wings:

• Army Wing

 • Naval Wing

 • Air Wing
Its motto is “Unity and Discipline,” which reflects its core values.
🔹 Current Scenario & Activities

  • Today, NCC is one of the largest uniformed youth organisations in the world, with more than 17 lakh cadets across schools and colleges.
  • NCC cadets actively participate in:
  •  Drill training and parade practice
  •  Weapon training and firing practice • Annual Training Camps (ATC)
  • Combined Annual Training Camps (CATC) • Republic Day Camp (RDC) in New Delhi
  •  National Integration Camps (NIC)
  •   Adventure activities like trekking, mountaineering, para-sailing
  • Social service activities such as tree plantation, blood donation, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
  •  Disaster relief operations during floods and emergencies
  •  Youth Exchange Program (YEP) for international exposure
  • The government is also expanding NCC in border and coastal areas and encouraging more girl cadets for women empowerment.

🔹 Impact of NCC on Youth

NCC “C” Certificate holders get preference in armed forces and additional benefits in some government jobs.
