Personal Development - Jim Rohn's Lessons

Fresh SSB batches starting 19th July. Referred articles were published in The Hindu.

1. The Core Principle

  • “If you will change, everything will change for you.”
  • Success comes not from changing the outside world, but from changing yourself.
  • Don’t wish for fewer problems — wish for more skills.
  • Work on personal development; everything will begin to shift.

2. The Starting Point: Money as a Measure
  • Money isn't everything, but it's a simple, countable starting point.
  • Helps identify errors in judgment and lack of discipline.
  • We are paid for value, not time.
    • Time ≠ Money.
    • Value in the time = Income.

3. Increase Your Value, Increase Your Income
  • Can you become twice or thrice as valuable and earn more in the same time? Yes!
  • You get paid for the value you bring to the marketplace, not for hours spent.
  • The marketplace = reality.
  • Example:
    • $4/hour to $400/hour — it’s about value, not time or demands.

4. Climbing the Ladder
  • America (and life) is a ladder, not a bed.
  • Everyone starts somewhere (e.g., $4/hour), but the key is to become more valuable.
  • Value climbs with attitude, skills, and contribution.
  • You don’t need to wait for a raise — you can climb faster by growing.

5. Example of Personal Change
  • Jim Rohn: At 25, broke and behind on promises.
  • Later, received a million-dollar offer — why? He became more valuable.
  • Change came not from external events, but internal transformation.

6. The Golden Rule
“Work harder on yourself than you do on your job.”
  • Job = Making a living.
  • Self = Making a fortune.
  • Skills, attitude, communication, and grace make you valuable.

7. Practical Action Steps
  • Don’t try to change the external: not the seed, not the soil, not the seasons.
  • Instead, change your philosophy, attitude, language, personality, and communication.
  • Begin now — the change within brings success without.
