✅ What is the Agnipath Scheme

  • Introduced: Approved on 14 June 2022, implemented from September 2022.
  • Purpose: A short-term recruitment initiative for the Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force) targeting youth below commissioned officer ranks. Recruits are called “Agniveers.”


🧰 Key Features & Benefits

  • Age Group: 17.5 to 21 years (raised to 23 for 2022 intake).
  • Tenure: 4 years total — ~6 months training + ~3.5 years active service.
  • Permanent Enrolment: Up to 25% of each batch may be retained based on performance.
  • Remuneration:
    • Starts at ₹30,000/month, increasing annually.
    • Seva Nidhi: Lump sum of ~₹11.71 lakh after 4 years — includes personal and government contributions + interest.
  • Other Benefits:
    • ₹48 lakh non-contributory life insurance.
    • Ex-gratia for disability or death in service.


⚠️ Criticisms & Challenges

  • No Pension or Gratuity: Agniveers do not receive post-retirement benefits.
  • Job Uncertainty: 75% exit after 4 years with no guaranteed employment.
  • Public Opposition: 2022 saw widespread protests over job security and financial concerns.
  • Morale Concerns: Critics argue short tenure may affect motivation and long-term commitment.
