2. No Time to Rest: India Did Well in Climbing Up SDG Rankings, but Falls Short in Governance
  • SDG Ranking: India ranks 110th out of 157 countries in the Sustainable Development Report, an improvement from 159 countries in 2016. This indicates progress but also the need for sustained efforts.  According to the latest Sustainable Development Report (SDR) 2025 by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, India ranks 99th in the SDG Index out of 167 countries, marking its first time in the top 100. This is a significant improvement from its previous rankings, such as 109th in 2024, 112th in 2023, 121st in 2022, and 120th in 2021.
  • Poverty Reduction (SDG 1): India has shown better progress in poverty reduction compared to its GDP estimation. However, proxy data suggests a considerable poverty reduction (22% in 2022 based on NSSO data, 12% in 2012 based on World Bank).
  • Zero Hunger (SDG 2): Remains a concern due to disparities in income and access to nutritious diets. 35.5% of Indian women (2019-21) were stunted, a slight improvement from 38.4% (NFHS-4, 2015-16). Obesity in the working age population has almost doubled between 2006 and 2021.
  • Clean Energy (SDG 7): India has achieved near universal household electrification. The country is the fourth largest renewables capacity deployer, especially in solar and wind.
  • Infrastructure & Digital Payments: Significant improvements in physical infrastructure and UPI-linked digital payments have been made.
  • Governance (SDG 16) Lagging: India's performance in governance and independent institutions has been lagging, which is crucial for achieving overall SDG targets.

  • Economic Aspects: The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a key component of this trilateral, linking China to Pakistan and enhancing regional connectivity.
  • Nepal's Role: Nepal's shifting foreign policy, influenced by China, is a concern for India.
